2. Grass Cutting

As the temperature rises grass cutting becomes a priority in the garden. A well-maintained lawn sets off a garden and the careful mowing of your grass plays a vital role in achieving a vigorous, fine quality grass sward. The secret to mowing is to mow often but not too tightly thereby keeping the grass long enough to prevent the roots from becoming starved but short enough to be attractive to the observer. Striping your lawn will in turn enhance the look even further and this can be achieved by either rolling or brushing the turf after mowing. We often get asked about cutting height and grass collection. For a utility lawn the correct cutting height ranges between 25mm – 28mm and this reduces back down to 12mm for luxury lawns. Keeping the grass that bit longer helps improve durability making it more hardwearing for kids and pets or circumstances where pedestrian traffic is high.

We would always recommend collecting grass clippings as uncollected clippings spreads weeds, causes disease and impedes air and water getting to the grass roots where it is needed.

We love cutting grass and offer a cut and collect mowing service. We have the capability to manage large and small lawn areas with our commercial mowing fleet. To discuss this service in more detail Contact Us

3. Hedge/Shrub Maintenance

Hedging and woody shrubs are popular in Irish gardens. The shrubs give structure to a garden and are less trouble to maintain than herbaceous borders. Once fully established there is little to be done apart from a periodic trim back. Hedging is also another big favourite providing shelter, privacy and security to a site.  Hedging requires frequent maintenance to keep it within the growth parameters set out for it within the garden. Large hedging used for screening and wind breaks can be challenging to maintain and need specialist equipment to access safely.

We provide a full hedge cutting service having the equipment to maintain hedging and shrubbery at various heights using our aluminium scaffolding and trestles. For more challenging projects a hydraulic platform may be required to service hard-to-reach hedges and shrubs safely. To discuss this service in more detail Contact Us

4. Weed Control

Weeds have always been a challenge to the gardener and in recent years there has been a push towards allowing many traditional “weeds” to flourish in an attempt to maximise the biodiversity within the garden. This trend has emerged because of concerns around the use of pesticides within the garden setting, however as a grounds maintenance professional it is often necessary to use pesticide in limited circumstances. Our philosophy has always been “less is more” when it comes to chemical usage. We only use biodegradable translocated herbicide and refrain from using any residual-based herbicide which have a negative effect on soil biology. We can provide you with a weed control programme to suit your garden. All our spraying equipment is tested and certified and we use low drift nozzles and sprayer shrouds where possible to reduce drift on spraying sites. We have the capacity to spray both large and small areas using knapsack, pedestrian and tractor mounted boom sprayers. All staff are trained in the safe use of pesticides and spraying equipment. 5. Leaf Collection

There’s no doubt that leaves put on a beautiful display in the garden during autumn time. Leaves turn from the various shades of green to shades of red, browns and gold. Leaf collection is a big part of our business during this colourful season. Every gardener knows that leaves get into every nook and cranny of the garden covering the lawn, borders, paths, gutters and ponds and require a lot of work over many weeks to clear off the site. It is important to remove these leaves promptly, especially from the lawn as they will form a wet opaque layer over the lawn during the winter months impeding light and promoting disease and moss development within the lawn. They also leave paths treacherous and prevent the movement of water through guttering. Leaves make excellent compost and when combined with other vegetation such as lawn clippings and garden prunings, they produce a compost which can be used for mulching plants within the garden and conditioning soil within the vegetable garden. We love blowing and collecting leaves which end up in the compost heap and we have the blow and vacuum equipment to service your site. To discuss this service in more detail Contact Us

6. Tree Planting

Trees are a delight in any garden. They provide structure, shelter and shade, in a variety of sizes, generally classified as small, medium and large. Most gardens will only manage to accommodate trees that fall into the small and medium categories and larger trees must be positioned with care within a garden due to their potential size at maturity. Before planting, it is very important to carefully assess the site for a tree and examine potential risk such as damage from roots, broken branches, excessive shade, wind turbulence etc. Traditionally trees were planted during the dormant season (November- March) but today any potted tree can be planted almost year-round. Large semi-mature trees are still by and large planted during the dormant season either as root balls or bareroots making them more cost effective. Leaf collection is a big part of our business during the Autumn They are also available in spring ring containers to allow planting to occur outside of the dormant season. After ground preparation staking is very important to ensure proper root development and anchoring of the tree. We use 50mm tree ties with soft rubber block spacers. These are exceptionally strong and are perfect in providing the support needed for a newly planted tree. We provide a tree planting service and have the equipment to handle large semi-mature trees. 7. Hedge Planting

Hedging can play a very important part in a garden and has always featured in some form or other within Irish gardens. Whether formal or informal it can provide shelter, security and privacy to a garden while also increasing the bio-diversity. As with trees, hedging plants in pots can be planted year-round while bareroot and rootball varieties can be planted during the dormant season (November-March). We also provide an instant hedge which is grown in 1 metre long troughs for immediate effect. These are a fantastic solution to screen and fill an area quickly and effectively. After planting it is very important to mulch generously. We recommend a fine bark mulch which is perfect to keep the weeds supressed while the plants are getting established. This bark will also help prevent soil desiccation during prolonged dry spells. We provide a hedge planting service including planting, mulching and wind break if necessary. 8. Lawn Care

A well-kept lawn can be a garden feature in its own right. We get asked a lot about lawn issues and particularly moss in lawns which is a big problem in Ireland due to our wet climate. Moss and lawn weeds must be tackled every season to keep them out of the turf. We apply sulphate of iron for the moss and a selective herbicide to tackle the weeds. We recommend scarifying the turf post treatment to remove the moss, weed and thatch from the lawn. Depending on the severity of moss/weed in a lawn topdressing may also be required after scarifying. This helps to populate the bare patches with grass seed and fill the divots to give a thick even lawn finish. This is a great way of getting your lawn in top shape for the season ahead. Other common lawn needs include lawn fertilizer, lawn drainage & aeration, top dressing, seed selection and mowing advice. To discuss this service in more detail Contact Us

10. Lawn Construction

For most of us a garden is not complete without a lawn and there is no doubt that a well-maintained lawn will give appeal to a garden and property. There are two basic types of turf lawn; the golf green type which is very impressive but requires a lot of specialist attention, and the lawn type which is perhaps for most of us the most suitable option, the utility turf lawn. The lawn seed mixtures chosen for this type of lawn are much more hardwearing, require less maintenance, tolerate a little neglect and generally are the most practical choice for a family garden.

Lawns can be established through two methods, namely seeding and “roll out” turf lawn. The preparation for both methods is identical; however it is at the final stage where the difference occurs. A seeded lawn is as the name implies a lawn established through the broadcasting of seed over a seedbed. There are different seeding machine types available but the end result for them all will basically involve placing the seed into a seed drill for germination to commence. A seeded lawn will generally take about two weeks before germination of the seed commences. This germination window can vary considerably depending on rainfall amounts. A turf lawn on the other hand is an instant lawn. It requires the same seedbed preparation but is as instant as rolling out a green carpet. Watering of a turf lawn after installation is very important to avoid turf shrink and ensure active root integration with the seed bed. It is cost prohibitive on larger areas but for smaller lawn areas where an instant look is required the turf lawn alternative is a very good proposition.

McCoy Landscaping Sligo has years of experience in lawn construction. Whether it be a small-town garden or large country estate McCoy Landscaping Sligo have both the machinery and knowhow to create your ideal lawn. Every lawn we install is constructed to a level of specification more commonly found on Golf Courses and Sports Turf. To discuss this service in more detail Contact Us

11. Fencing

A fence provides the quickest and usually the easiest way of forming and securing a boundary to your property. If privacy is important to you then a solid fence is the answer. Nine out of ten times this will be made up of timber, which can be cut and erected on site or come in the shape of pre-fabricated panels for fixing between posts.

Whichever system is chosen, firm supports are key to the longevity of any fence. Fencing posts are generally constructed using one of the following three materials: timber, steel or concrete. While timber is the cheapest it may not necessarily be the most cost- effective in the long term as the boarded part of the fence will always outlast the timber post, which if set in concrete will rot at its base prematurely.

A concrete post is the next option and is a good alternative to timber. However, although extremely strong in compression, concrete posts can be very brittle and vulnerable to lateral impacts. This is something that should be considered where heavy livestock are present.
A steel post is perhaps the strongest upright that can be used in general fencing applications and if the steel is galvanised dipped then this post will last a lifetime even when set in concrete. The trade-off is cost and galvanized steel posts over a lengthy fence run will be expensive in the short term but a sound investment in the long term

A hybrid system combining the aesthetic appeal of timber with the longevity of galvanised steel in concrete is a highly sought after fencing concept. This is perhaps the ultimate in fence construction, wherein the best properties from both timber and steel are drawn upon to produce a beautiful fence which will last a lifetime. McCoy Landscaping Sligo can supply and erect your fence to a specification that suits your budget and tastes. We have our own timber processing facility and metal fabrication workshop.
